This course is designed for non-science students who are interested in gaining a basic understanding of global technoscientific issues and in extending their capacity to envision how to improve the world and make it more sustainable. The goal is to help students become more engaged, yet critical citizens capable of adopting educated stands on sustainability-related issues. Students will get introduced to relevant sciences and technologies that can help them understand specific issues (climate change, pollution, energy and resource management, or the like, selected based on an initial survey of interests), and more importantly they will be invited to start thinking about potential solutions to solve them. A constant effort will be made to keep things very practical. Classes will have an interactive format with frequent activities, including round tables and communities of inquiry. Students are expected to participate in discussions, develop an ethical stand, and offer some proposal of solution. This course can be integrated to a Sustainability Major and/or a Creativity & Innovation Major.
