We live in an increasingly politicized and polarized world in which the ability to scrutinize arguments and to develop and articulate our own is essential. In this course, students will be introduced to the basic skills of critical thinking, including inductive and deductive reasoning, recognizing logical fallacies, and assessing arguments. They will also be introduced to rhetorical strategies in order to develop and articulate their own persuasive arguments that are logically sound, cogent, and clearly expressed. This course develops skills that have wide application, such as in the fields of law, medical ethics, political science, and journalism. It will also provide an opportunity for students to research, discuss, and debate some of the most pressing and controversial issues of our time.
